Pageant of the Golden Tree
Saturday 25 August and Sunday 26 August 2007 at 4 pm.
The Pageant of the Golden
Tree, which takes place every five years, was conceived in 1958 and has been
modernized on the occasion of 2002, the year in which Bruges is Cultural
Capital of Europe. Realisation : City of Bruges with the cooperation of the
Committee for Initiative.
Central theme remains the
“Tournament of the Golden Tree”, organized on the occasion of the wedding of
Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders, with the English
princess Margareth of York. The age-old legend of the Golden Tree is also
acted out. Since 2002, the pageant also offers a more modern historical
representation of the history of Flanders with special attention to the role
of the municipal magistracy, the guilds and the corporations in their battle
against the ruling sovereigns. But in the first place, this pageant is of
course a colourful and enchanting event with some 2 000 actors, six giants
and twelve floats.
